Homemade Caramel Recipe: A Smooth and Buttery Delight

 


Caramel is a rich, sweet, and buttery treat that enhances everything from desserts to drinks. Making caramel at home is easier than you think, requiring just a few simple ingredients. Follow this step-by-step guide to create a perfectly smooth, golden caramel that you can use for drizzling, dipping, or as a candy base.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 6 tbsp (90g) unsalted butter, cut into pieces
  • ½ cup (120ml) heavy cream, at room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
  • ½ tsp salt (optional, for salted caramel)

Instructions:

Step 1: Melt the Sugar

  1. In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, heat the sugar over medium heat.
  2. Stir constantly with a heat-resistant spatula or wooden spoon as the sugar begins to melt.
  3. The sugar will clump at first but will eventually turn into a smooth, amber-colored liquid.

Step 2: Add the Butter

  1. Once the sugar is fully melted, carefully add the butter, one piece at a time, stirring continuously.
  2. The mixture will bubble up—keep stirring until the butter is completely melted and incorporated.

Step 3: Incorporate the Cream

  1. Slowly pour in the heavy cream while stirring constantly. The mixture will bubble vigorously.
  2. Continue stirring until the caramel becomes smooth and well combined.

Step 4: Add Flavoring (Optional)

  1. Remove the caramel from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract and salt if using.
  2. Let the caramel cool for 10–15 minutes before transferring to a heatproof jar or container.

Tips for Perfect Caramel:

  • Use a heavy-bottomed pan to prevent burning.
  • Avoid stirring too much while the sugar melts to prevent crystallization.
  • Be patient and use medium heat to ensure smooth caramelization.
  • Store caramel in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Reheat gently before use.
